The Town of Deep River is considering implementing a food waste diversion program and would like to understand our community's interest in participating in a pilot program.
Food waste makes up 25% to 50% of household waste and contributes significantly to the greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing and diverting food waste from our landfill at Baggs Road would extend the landfill site's life, reduce long-term costs, and reduce our community's environmental impact.
A component of the Food Waste Diversion program would consist of making FoodCycler™ appliances available to households at a subsidized cost. The FoodCycler™ is an electric countertop appliance that processes food waste, significantly reducing its volume and weight. Regular use of the appliance should not cost more than $4 per month in electricity and offers a >95% reduction in CO2e emissions compared to sending food waste to landfill. The byproduct can be used as a fertilizer substitute,
We would like to understand our community's interest in participating in a pilot program. Participating in the pilot program would cost $150 for a FoodCycler™ FC-30 model or $300 for the larger capacity FoodCycler™ Maestro model. Participants would be asked to track their usage for 12 weeks and provide feedback. Participants would keep their unit after the pilot.
Note that the Pilot program will only run if there is sufficient interest.
